They don’t believe in mowing
This was the worse course I’ve ever played. They don’t maintain anything. No sand in bunkers, overgrown, bumpy and slow greens, dandelions as far as the eye can see, small driving range, there is nothing good I can say about this place.
Unique
Lets get the bad out of the way: Course conditions, lets go with not good. Also, if you are looking for the staff to say hello or welcome you...don't hold your breath.
The good: If you go in with an open mind, this course will be a fun experience! At nearly 100 years old, the trees are so tall and mature you will need work the ball every direction.
Fun and quirky...get this. They actually have a small sand bunker in the middle of the 5th hole (Riviera established in 1926, so not sure who came first?).
One of the par 3's on back 9 is SO out of place. You hit a 130 yrd shot over a waste area to the green...then after you finish, you walk back exactly where you started and tee off the other way to the next hole.
This course should be easy, but it isn't
A neat old layout, with majestic 100-foot tall trees throughout. If it's well-manicured that you're looking for, go to the other course in Albany.
If it's a fun, challenging old-school golf experience, this one might be for you. Despite playing short (around 6,000 yards), tight fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and some big trees in just the wrong places make you have to work.
I've played this course a few times and have not scored nearly as well as I'd expect given the length. The driver stays in my bag on most holes as the ideal landing zones are usually 200-240 yards out. Lots of hybrids off the tees. Greens are small, sloped, and not always in the best shape.
There are a couple holes on the back nine which are sharp dogleg right, and require 220-ish off the tee to make the corner. No problem for me but tough on older folks who don't hit it as far.
Overall, it's an interesting enough layout to keep me coming back. It's also very walkable and hasn't been busy at all this spring/summer, unlike many other courses.
A blue collar course.
Nothing fancy, Beer & dogs. A fun challenging course to play with your friends. Actually prefer it to the more expensive course down the road.
