Short and sweet: The par-63 Challenge golf course at Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond
REDMOND, Ore. -- Short and sweet, the Challenge Course at Eagle Crest Resort has a fitting niche in central Oregon.
Eagle Crest has two full-length 18-hole layouts, the Resort Course and Ridge Course. The Challenge, meanwhile, is a par-63 short course with three sets of tees playing as long as 4,175 yards with a mix of nine par 4s and nine par 3s.
It's a layout ideal for beginners, but still good for better players who just want a quick tune-up on a course they can play in less than three hours. The longest hole is the fourth at 399 yards, while the remaining par 4s play closer to 300 yards from the back tees.
Eagle Crest is set in a beautiful setting and the Challenge has some of its own scenic holes, including the downhill par-3 10th hole and the downhill 14th hole, which has a small pond to the right of the green. Many of the par 4s are drivable for better players, but the greens have their difficulties in slopes and many holes have multiple bunkers on them. The 18th, for example, is a straightaway par 4 that is less than 300 yards, but four bunkers guard the green.
The Challenge Course is located at the same clubhouse as the Ridge Course as well as the resort's 18-hole grass putting course and driving range. Minutes away, the resort has condominium and hotel accommodations and a variety of activities, from swimming to horseback riding, waterborne adventures and cycling.
